Increase the minimum wage and develop an affordable health care for the economic disadvantaged workers.

By Wayne E. Coates

Candidate for State Representative; District 32

If the "welfare to work" program is to be truly successful we need to raise the minimum wage, and develop an affordable health insurance policy for the working disadvantaged.
I support an increase in the state minimum wage law. Economic disadvantage workers make about $5.35 per hour if they are afforded a forty-hour workweek. That's only $11,128 a year before taxes. The poverty level for a family of three in 1999 was $13,433. Given the cost of housing, utilities, transportation cost, food for the kids, medical cost, and childcare costs, a single mother with two children carries a tremendous burden. Could you live on $5.35 an hour?

Many individuals who have to go back on welfare have a medical issue that needs to be resolved. Too many low-paying jobs do not offer health insurance. We need to partner with businesses to develop an affordable basic health insurance plan to get them off welfare and keep them off.
