Sylvia Munoz Schnopp Political Philosophy

I am Sylvia Munoz Schnopp, Candidate, Area 5 Board of Trustees for the Ventura County Community College District on November 7, 2000. Born and raised in Oxnard by Jose and Herminia Munoz, I attended Santa Clara Elementary School and graduated from Santa Clara High School.

I received all my post-secondary degrees from local schools: an Associate of Arts degree from Ventura College; a Bachelor of Science Degree with an emphasis in Marketing from California State University, Northridge; and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) with an emphasis in Finance from California Lutheran University.

With this education, I personally understand the value and opportunity of accessing higher education through our community colleges. It allowed someone like me the only access to higher education, benefitting my family and committing me as a champion and role model for higher education and community volunteerism.

I have been an active member and mentor of the Puente Mentorship Council at Oxnard College. By mentoring students as well as being a guest speaker for several Puente Courses, I have had the opporutnity to encourage our future leaders to stay in school and pursue at minimum their Bachelor's degree. I have been instrumental in raising funds to provide student scholarships for those continuing their Oxnard College studies as well for those transferring to universities.

I have a passion for higher education, and for the community colleges of Ventura County: Oxnard, Moorpark and Ventura Colleges.

I wish to instill this passion for higher education in Ventura County as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Ventura County Community College District. All students at our community colleges should have the opportunity for life-long learning, allowing them to enhance their skills, knowledge base as well as prepare for the jobs of the future. Offering quality, higher education through Oxnard, Moorpark and Ventura Colleges is critical today more than ever. I will ensure that access and affordability for anyone wishing a higher education at our community colleges is readily available.

Critical to our success is bridging the "digital divide" by increasing the use of technology for instruction as well as student learning at our colleges. Remember, our future leaders are students of today!

Help our students fulfill their dreams. Vote for me as your candidate of choice for the November 7, 2000 election for the Board of Trustees of the Ventura County Community College District.

Thank you.

- Sylvia
