"DAVE THE PAVE"... FRIEND OF THE ENVIRONMENT

By David F. "Dave" Romero

Candidate for Mayor; City of San Luis Obispo

This information is provided by the candidate
Based on Councilman Romero's track record, it seems that he really is a genuine environmentalist...and a candidate who cares!
One of our current mayoral candidates, Dave Romero, has recently been nicknamed "Dave the Pave" by some of the SLO citizens who want to protect our environment. When asked about this term, Councilman Romero admitted his guilt. "As Public Works Director for 36 years, I was responsible to see that the streets in SLO were paved, repaved, and properly maintained. And as a city councilman, I have been an unrelenting advocate for an aggressive street maintenance program. So, yes, the "Dave the Pave" title is one I'm honored to accept."

In the paving department, it does seem that Councilman Romero has more than earned his nickname. But is he really a friend of the environment? Councilman Romero responds: "Well, according to Webster's Dictionary, an environmentalist is 'a person working to solve environmental problems'. Since I started working for the city in 1956, I have been actively involved in protecting and improving the air and water of our beautiful city. I have helped to keep our air cleaner by having a hand in freeing up traffic congestion, by installing and maintaining bike lanes, by starting and operating the transit systems, and by encouraging pedestrian movement and safety with city sidewalk improvements. I have helped to keep our water cleaner by treating and distributing pure, clean drinking water, by collecting, treating, and disposing of waste water, by protecting our creeks from pollution and from bank erosion, by protecting our residents from flooding, and by protecting the fish life by careful pruning of trees along creeks to provide overhead shading. I have always considered all sources of water to ensure that our city has a pure, clean, and affordable supply. I helped to initiate and supervise recycling programs, both citywide and countywide, including the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). I was instrumental in helping to plant and maintain 10,000 street trees, to upgrade all parks in the city, and to build, maintain and improve the Mission Plaza. I voted to acquire 849 acres of open space and actively negotiate for 842 additional acres to develop a greenbelt around the city.

Personally, I recycle curbside, drive a low-polluting, economical car, and am a long-time, active outdoorsman who is very sensitive to the environment. San Luis Obispo is my home, and I love helping to keep our environment as beautiful as it has become. I hope you will think of me as "Dave, Friend of the Environment"; but if you prefer "Dave the Pave", please remember that I am "Paving the Way for a Better SLO Future."

Based on Councilman Romero's track record, it seems that he really is a genuine environmentalist...and a candidate who cares!
