Attracting and keeping high quality Nursing staff and expanding services

By Marcelo R. Rivera

Candidate for Board Member; Palomar Pomerado Health System

This information is provided by the candidate
In order to provide excellent services PPHS should attract and keep excellent staff. In a time of financial difficulty it is imperative not to get into a negative spiral. Nursing and ancillary staff are crucial to the high performance of the Hospitals. Physicians should expect the Hospitals used by their patients to provide the best services.
It is easy to get into a negative spiral when faced by financial setbacks. The task before the next Board is to reverse this spiral and expand services wisely. It is easy to keep cutting back, but a system that does not use a creative approach will fail.

Addressing the need for excellent staff is crucial. Without good people, service to people will falter. To attract the best Nurses, PPHS must provide a good working environment. This environment does not just mean good wages, it also means providing means for professional growth. We need self governed working sites and opportunities to go up the professional ladder and achieving career goals. PPHS should provide incentives for continued educational growth. Investment in technology should be made with the goal of maximizing patient contact time. Equipment must continue to be upgraded to insure the most modern technological services to the patient to improve patient outcomes.

Physicians must be assured that they will have all the necessary equipment and medical resources so the patients are well attended. The community must be guaranteed that when they present to our Hospitals, all the modern medical treatments and services are available. This will be accomplished by directing all the financial resources to direct patient services. Administrative costs will be cut back in order not to sacrifice direct patients services.
