Detailed Biography:

Scott Peters will bring to the City Council relevant community and professional experience, an ability to listen and solve problems, and an optimistic view of San Diego and its potential. Having worked for both the government and the private sector as well as for a variety of community interests, Peters understands the limits of government and the potential of our city.

Scott Peters graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Duke University and from New York University School of Law. After practicing law for four years in the Midwest, Peters and his wife Lynn moved to La Jolla a little over a decade ago. During that time, Scott worked for Baker & McKenzie, the world's largest international law firm. He also has become involved in a broad array of community and civic issues, as a trustee of the La Jolla Town Council, as a member of the public working committee for the Lindbergh Field Master Plan as well as the Diamond Gateway Chamber of Commerce, as a board member of the Citizens Coordinate for Century 3 (C-3), as an executive member of the Committee of 2000, and as a member of SANDAG's Integrated Waste Management Citizens Advisory Committee. He is a graduate of LEAD San Diego. In addition, he has served as president of the Friends of the La Jolla Library and has coached youth soccer and baseball in La Jolla.

As Deputy County Counsel for San Diego County from 1991 to 1996, Peters supervised a seven-lawyer environmental land use/litigation team which handled a wide range of county disputes, covering such areas as contamination, development, waste management and federal and state regulatory compliance. Earlier in his career, Peters served as an economist at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where he gained valuable experience in the federal government's first attempts to apply cost/benefit analysis to new government regulations.

As a private attorney, first with international law firms and later in his own firm, Peters has helped business clients understand and comply with their environmental obligations. He has represented local governments, including the City of San Diego, in forming private/public partnerships for waste collection and disposal. Peters' work in his own business and with companies ranging in size from family businesses to the Fortune 500 has given him keen insight into building and managing a business in a complex regulatory environment. Peters also recently represented two environmental groups in a groundbreaking Clean Water Act victory against the nation's largest ship repair company, which illegally failed to contain stormwater runoff into San Diego Bay. Peters will also bring to the City Council a truly unique understanding of the important link between stormwater runoff and ocean water quality.

Peters' candidacy has been endorsed by organizations and individuals across the political spectrum, including the San Diego Police Officers Association, San Diego City Fire Fighters, League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club, San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council, San Diego County Apartment Association, San Diego Association of REALTORS®, Corridor News, Supervisor Pam Slater (R), Senator Dede Alpert (D) and primary election runner up Lisa Ross.

As the father of two young children, Scott Peters wants to ensure that this city is properly managed not only for the immediate future but also well into the 21st century. He wants San Diego to be a place where his children will want to stay and raise their own families. Scott will fight to ensure that our region's growth is properly planned to preserve our high quality of life, that our city's infrastructure is adequate to support that growth, that our neighborhoods and schools are kept safe from violent crime, and that our city's finances are sound.
