Judge Dick Murphy Biography

Judge Dick Murphy is uniquely qualified by education, experience, and integrity to be Mayor of San Diego.

Dick graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. in Economics from the University of Illinois, received his Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) from Harvard University, and his Law Degree (J.D.) from Stanford University.

Dick served as an officer in the U.S. Army, as the San Diego Marketing Director for the Bank of America, and as an attorney at the law firm of Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps.

Dick served on the San Diego City Council from 1981 to 1985. This period launched the transformation of downtown San Diego with the final approval of Horton Plaza Shopping Center and the Convention Center.

He served as Chair of the Metropolitan Transit Development Board. Under his leadership, funding for the East Line of the San Diego Trolley was secured and construction begun.

He served as Chair of the Mission Trails Regional Park Task Force. Working with other community leaders, he led the effort to establish Mission Trails Regional Park as San Diego's largest park.

Dick was appointed Municipal Court Judge in 1985 by Governor George Deukmejian and elevated to Superior Court Judge in 1989 where he has presided over hundreds of complex criminal and civil trials. He has taken an unpaid leave of absence from the court to run for Mayor of San Diego.

Dick and his wife Jan have lived in San Diego for 30 years and have raised three children # Brian, Shannon, and Kelly. Dick has coached 20 youth soccer, baseball, softball, and basketball teams. He is an active member of San Carlos United Methodist Church and the San Diego Rotary Club.
