Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Anthony J Gier

Candidate for
City Council; City of Santee

This information is provided by the candidate

Dear neighbor,

As you read on, you will view how I feel about issues that affect our everyday lives in the City of Santee. We live in a great city, however, with more citizen-responsive government, I believe it could be even better. When it comes down to issues where decisions must be made, I consider the expert opinions to be the input from the citizens, not just highly paid consultants that know very little about our city. Please take a few moments to read on about how I feel about pertinent issues that the City of Santee is facing these days.

Traffic

Traffic is such a major problem in Santee. It will be my pleasure to lobby for completion of the 52 to the 67 sooner than the projected (2010). I also want to widen Mast Blvd.

The sooner the 52 is completed, the sooner Mission Gorge Rd. will not be so busy at rush hour.

Residential Development

I am in favor of LIMITED residential development as long as there is a reliable traffic plan. Property tax is good for the city but not at the expense of additional traffic congestion without a logical plan. A small amount of development on Fanita Ranch(200 homes, not 3,000)would be ideal(assuming there is a common sense plan for traffic) because of the increase in property tax and the fact that all citizens would have a nice park to go to with the rest of the Mission Trails area.

Town Square

Some council members want to bring in a Target because they are unable to get a movie theatre in at this time. I think that would be a terrible mistake. Think about how non-busy the area where the Target store is in El Cajon. Now compare that with how busy the movie theatre in Santee used to be. Which do you think would attract more people to the area to spend money and have a good time? I propose we set land aside for a movie theatre that will eventually come in while in the mean time start development on nicer restaurants, retail space, office space and high-tech businesses. All of this will provide growth for our economy and the tax dollars would be great.

Rent-control

I am in favor of rent-control in the mobile home parks.

New Santee Library

Why hasn't it been built yet? Our current library does not meet the needs of our community. I am in support of a new library that will have up-to-date technology as well as provide an additional number of books. Our children and other citizens deserve the best library we can provide. The state will pay 65% of the cost.

Town Center Park

Currently, the city does not have all of the money needed for financing all phases of the park. I suggest the city apply for grants from the state that become available next year. Why use local tax dollars to pay for all of the park if we can get our fair share of money from the state?

Public Safety

Whether it be our relatives, friends, or ourselves, we want to live in a neighborhood where we feel safe and secure. This is why I will oppose any public safety budget cuts.

Youth Programs

Being a teacher, I know how important it is to provide recreation for our youth. I will support and innitiate programs that will provide activities for our children while keeping them out of trouble.

Local Economy

We must plan to develop a strong economic base that will provide jobs, quality goods and services and revenues that will remain in our community. I am committed to bringing in quality businesses that will help our economy grow. I believe bringing in the kinds of businesses that I mentioned above under the section of Town Square will do this for us.

City Services

I believe in a customer-driven government. Let's meet the needs of the customer, the everyday citizen. Improvements in government should be constantly sought after to ensure that taxpayers are getting the most for their buck. Efficiency, not waste, should be what your government is about. Although I want to be a representative, I will always be an everyday citizen first, and I want the most for my tax dollars just like others.
