Candidate for Member of the Board of Education; Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Dr. Escarce's candidate statement for the voter information booklets.
My wife, Eileen, and I have three children, including a preschooler and two in the public schools. We are deeply committed to public education. I serve on the steering committee of Community for Excellent Public Schools, a group of civic leaders that advocates for public education. I have participated in the Fine Arts District Advisory Committee, the Parcel Tax Committee, and the panel that interviewed principal candidates for Santa Monica High.

I graduated from Princeton University, earned a masters' degree from Harvard, and received my M.D. and economics Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, where I later taught for eight years. After completing medical residency at Stanford, I provided medical care to poor, uninsured patients in San Ysidro, California. Currently, I conduct research on health policy at RAND and teach at UCLA.

I am committed to:

  • Hiring an outstanding superintendent.
  • Strengthening the Board's relationships with teachers, parents, and the community.
  • Fostering professional development for teachers and staff.
  • Promoting learning and academic achievement through programs to help ALL students reach their full potential.
  • Restoring financial credibility to the District.

I am bilingual and can bring together people with diverse views to achieve shared goals. With your vote, I will help our school district become one of the best in California.
