Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Joan M. Stockholm

Candidate for
Governing Board Member; John Swett Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate

Our district needs to focus on achievement for all students. First we need to make sure our curriculum is articulated within each school and that it flows into the middle and high school. To comply with growth targets for the Academic Performance Index, we will have to make sure that this curriculum is aligned with state standards.

In order for our students to achieve to their highest goals, we also have to make sure that our teachers have many opportunities for professional development and that they have all the tools at hand -- like enough textbooks and supplies -- to run their programs.

In order to maintain a high quality education program I will aggressively monitor the district's budget to maintain our fiscal solvency. We will need to seek and secure funds in order to retain and reward our teachers and for repair and rehabilitation of our aging buildings.

Since our district is facing declining growth, in order to retain teachers and programs, I will also support and fight for a parcel tax in our community.
