Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Gary Schwaegerle

Candidate for
Member, Board of Trustees; Chabot-Las Positas Community College District; Area 5

This information is provided by the candidate

1. Most pressing Issues for the Board:

In the next few months we have to select a New District Chancellor, a Vice Chancellor to replace Dr. Barbara Mertes, a new President and 3 vice presidents at Chabot. These choices will determine the future of our district. I feel I can contribute to that selection process with my Business background and extensive experience on numerous Boards and Committees.

Biggest money issues and priorities:

  • Make our local Community Colleges the Best they can be. Keep the local students within our district and not lose them to surrounding community colleges.
  • Find replacement leadership for departing administrators and work on longer retention of the best people.
  • Relocate District offices in owned quarters instead of continuing to pay increasing rents.

2. Priority classes and funding:

Work Force Training, meeting the rapidly changing times and needs not only in the work place but also in the home. Our gov't is seeking people from outside our own country to fill the (high tech) job needs in our country. Technology training, meet the demand needs in the Market place. For example: BART's need of train engineers working in conjunction with the College a graduate can go immediately to work with nearly $100,000 a year salary.

Bring back Extension Classes to Dublin and Pleasanton.

Also, I would like to see more collegiate athletics at LPC campus to attract more students.

3. Personal and mutual Board Goals:

  • Quality schools affect not only the quality of life now but for future Generations to come. The facts show quality schools attract people and business to our communities and an educated society leads to better quality of life for all.
  • My goal to continue to build a stronger bridge to our Community Colleges.
  • Team with Board Members to support both College Foundations.

4. Ideas and plans for schools growth and success:

Build up Full Time Equivalents (FTE) for state revenues.
Continue to build up marketing effort and enhance the schools reputation.
Expansion of Collegiate Athletics may help attract students to LPC.
Learn from the plans, programs and success of neighboring community colleges, what attracts our students out of our district and to those schools, i.e. DVC.

5. Why I am the best person for the job:

During my 20 years as a Businessman in the East Bay I have served on numerous Boards, Committees and Organizations that gives me extensive background as a team player, consensus builder and negotiator. Of particular interest to Chabot Campus: I worked around 4 years part time for Weber BMW in San Leandro, part time while attending school One job was deliver parts throughout the entire Bay area. For probably the 1st 10 years of my Real Estate Career, 75% of my business was conducted in Hayward, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Castro Valley and Oakland. This experience gave me a special appreciation for the community and the needs thereof. I am not a politician from the other side of the Hill, I am the person who still cares and works in your Community.
