It's a great time to be Mayor of such a special city. Fremont is continually winning recognition--as an All-America City, as the best large city in the country to raise a child, for our housing scholarship program, for our emergency water supply program, for the Cafe Nova operated by teens at our new Family Resource Center. It goes on and on. All of this is testament to our strong emphasis on planning and a commitment to making Fremont a place for people to build their futures as we build the city.

I have spent 20 of the last 22 years of my life serving as Councilmember or Mayor. I can tell you firsthand that it took hard work to get where we are today, but now we can go so much farther. We need a real downtown, a center for the arts, a better balance of jobs to housing to reduce commutes, traffic flow improvements around town, extension of BART to San Jose, more rehabilitation of the older neighborhoods in the historic districts, better housing opportunities for all segments of our population, and a greater emphasis on both senior and youth activities.

I hope you will help me continue.
