Transportation Idea - Light Rail System

The Alameda Beltline goes from Alameda Point all the way across the Island, over the Fruitvale Bridge and stops one block from Fruitvale Bart. A light rail system could possibly be Alameda's connection to Bart if the Open Space Initiative passes. Electric buses could connect up the business parks and business districts for travelers. Our goal of the new century is to get people out of their cars and into public transit.

Affordable Housing - No Down/Lease to Own

No Down - for qualified low-income first time home buyers. California Home Financing Association (CHFA) will do home financing for first time homebuyers for no down payment! A 3% (silent 2nd Deed of Trust) is used for your down payment and if you live in the home 10 years the 2nd Deed of Trust is considered paid.

The City could look into establishing a revolving loan fund (like the McCauley Institute) for first time home buyers assistance - workforce housing.

Wells Fargo has special programs for $500 down home ownership for teachers.

After the Great Depression homeownership was frequently purchased with lease to own contracts. The first 12 months (or more) can become your downpayment if you exercise your lease to own (purchase) with the specified time in the contract.

Many Alameda residents, both tenants and property owners, recognize Alameda's potential. But we must also turn the corner on the future of our island community with realistic long range planning. Ideas to revitalize the business districts and to make neighborhoods more attractive do not require investing in expensive studies. I believe that many people have worthwhile ideas for projects that can make a better environment for residents and business owners with the right commitment. I also want City staff to be more responsive to the general public so that the City becomes a service provider and not an obstacle.

As a longterm resident active in historical preservation, and as a business owner trying to renovate an historic property, my experiences with City government have become legendary.

I have the experience, energy and dedication to make my commitment to a seat on the City Council an opportunity for meaningful change. Allow me to represent you and Elect Susan Maureen McCormack for City Council on Tuesday, November 7, 2000.
