Matt is a lifelong resident of the San Francisco Bay Area having been raised in Contra Costa County. In 1987 Matt moved to Fremont where he continues to reside.

Matt has dedicated his adult life to public service. He attended the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and then served as a commissioned officer for 12 years. Having attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander he received an honorable discharge in 1992. Upon leaving the Coast Guard, Matt joined the University of California at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. As an attorney at the Laboratory he protects public funds from frivolous lawsuits.

He is currently the vice chairman of the Fremont Economic Development Advisory Commission having been appointed in 1993 and served two years as its chairman. This commission ensures that Fremont has a business friendly environment to provide jobs and services for its residents.

Matt was elected to the Niles Redevelopment Project Area Committee in 1997, and has served as its chairman for nearly 3 years. The committee makes recommendations to the City of Fremont regarding the revitalization of downtown Niles.

A member of the Alameda County Planning Commission since 1996, Matt served one term as its chairman. The planning commission reviews and makes recommendations regarding urban and rural development in Alameda County.

Matt is a member of numerous community groups including the Niles Merchants Association, the Centerville Business Association, the Pacific Locomotive Association (Niles Canyon Railway), and Friends of the Don Edwards (no relation) Wildlife Refuge. He is a 1999 graduate of the Alameda County Master Composter Program, and gives home composting demonstrations in Fremont.

He enjoys restoring a 100 year old home in Niles, spending time with his immediate family in Niles, and helping prepare his nieces and nephews for preschool.
