While in the navy, from 1958 to 1962, I was stationed in different parts of California. During this time, I realized that one did not have to freeze from November through March every year. When I was discharged from the service, my family moved back to Iowa, my home state. By 1967, I'd had enough and we moved back to sunny California and have only gone back for visits during summers.

My wife, Carolyn, and I have lived at the same address in the city of Orange since 1976. We have three grown children who received their education in Orange County, and we also have two grandsons. Since 1970, I have made a career with organized labor. It is there that I have been able to help working people and working families get better pay -checks, better health care, and better pensions for those who retire.

I have spent many years working on behalf of candidates running for office and for propositions that would better the lives of working people. In 1996, I ran for the State Assembly in the 71st District, and though I didn't win the seat, it was a truly positive learning experience, which lead me to try again., this time for the State Senate seat in our Di
