James Cavuoto is a Torrance-based businessman who has been active in high-technology industries and community activities. Cavuoto is the founder of Micro Publishing Press, a Torrance-based publishing company that produces magazines and books in the computer graphics and electronic imaging industries. Before founding Micro Publishing Press, Cavuoto was the editor of Lasers & Applications, a technical magazine in the lasers and optics field. Prior to that, he was a member of the technical staff and corporate publications editor at Hughes Aircraft Company in El Segundo. Cavuoto earned his degree in biomedical engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, where he studied under pioneers of the new field of functional electrical stimulation, which restores function to damaged muscles and organs. He served eight years as member and chairman of the Torrance Library Commission and is currently on the board of the Torrance Library Foundation. He is also a member of the Venice Interactive Community, and has served on the advisory board of three Los Angeles-area regional occupational centers.

Active in local party activities, Cavuoto served as president of the Torrance Democratic Club and was a delegate to the 1992 Democratic National Convention in New York. Cavuoto, 42, has lived in Torrance for 12 years, and has served two stints as president of the Emerald Square Homeowners Association. He attends St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Redondo Beach.
