Elliot Daum grew up in Washington, D.C. He left D.C. in 1966 to attend Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut where he majored in Psychology. He received his Baccalaureate of Arts degree in 1970 after spending most of his Junior and Senior college years working as the in-house director of the Gilead House, a halfway house for former mental patients. In 1973 Elliot received his Juris Doctor from the University of Santa Clara School of Law. He was admitted to the State Bar of California later that same year. Elliot initially practiced law in San Jose. In 1975 Elliot moved to Sonoma County opening a private practice with emphasis on civil and criminal litigation. Elliot's civil experience includes providing representation in divorce, welfare, social security, landlord/tenant, and all manner of civil litigation including probate and guardianship. In 1981 Elliot accepted a position as a felony deputy public defender. He has, since then, been handling the most difficult criminal cases in Sonoma County as a member of the Serious Felony Team. His criminal experience has included more than 100 felony jury trials. His experience has included numerous homicide cases including two capital cases that went to jury.

Elliot currently teaches at Sonoma State University in the Administration of Justice and Communications Departments as well as continuing to practice law.

Elliot is married to Linda Tavis, a certified Family Law Specialist who practices in Santa Rosa. Elliot's daughter Sarah is a freshman at Santa Rosa High School and his stepsons, M.A.T. and Jimmy are college students.

Elliot has served on various community volunteer boards involving children. His longest board term was on the Sonoma County Board of Big Brothers / Big Sisters. He has been a Big Brother himself for more than 14 years.
