Affirmative Action

By Joe Julian

Candidate for Democratic Party Central Committee; Assembly District 12

This information is provided by the candidate
Why do you believe that Affirmative Action is or is not necessary, and what do you believe the concept entails: e.g. quotas, applicant pools, etc?
We have not made enough progress in bringing about fair treatment for women. The same case could be made for people of color. Sexism and racism still exist and we should not stop our progress now. Our Affirmative Action policy at San Francisco State University did not entail quotas, but good faith efforts to have qualified women and people of color in the applicant pool. This allowed me to hire 35 out of 40 faculty who were women, people of color and disabled when I was a college dean. Before I went back to SFSU in 1986, white males dominated the faculty.
