Why the GOP is backing Willie Brown

By Michael DeNunzio

The following letter to the editor was published in the San Francisco Chronicle on November 12, 1999.
Editor -- Republicans did not "grit teeth (to) back Brown" as was headlined in The Chronicle on November 9. On the contrary, we showed teeth. Yes, there were eight Republicans who held their principle not to endorse Democrats. We admire and respect them greatly. The real story is the 18 votes to endorse the mayor. It demonstrated that Republican leadership can protect this city from civil war among Democrats.

Republicans are in this battle because it is about public policy that will affect San Francisco for years to come. This election is not about personalities or preferences. We all have a stake -- seniors, singles, families, nonprofits, homeowners, the neighborhoods, small businesses and the needy.

The 63,000 registered Republicans in San Francisco and the many thousands of independent voters and moderate Democrats are a voice for responsible fiscal policy and sound social policy. That voice will be heard on December 14 and in the district elections of 2000.
