In November 1996, Peter A. McHugh was elected to the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors for District Three, which includes Alviso, Berryessa, Evergreen, and the Cities of Milpitas and Sunnyvale.

Supervisor McHugh's priorities for Santa Clara County include:

Improving government efficiency. Providing affordable housing and reducing traffic congestion. Providing an efficient and effective Criminal Justice System. Continuing to provide the safety net for those in need. Building a multi-cultural community that embraces diversity.

Among his many Board Committee assignments, he is Chair of the Board's Finance and Government Operations Committee and is Vice-Chair of the Board's Housing, Land Use, Environment and Transportation Committee.

Previously, Supervisor McHugh served as Chair of the Board's Public Safety and Justice Committee for two years. During his tenure, Supervisor McHugh established a collaborative problem solving environment with the County's many law and justice officials. Among the many issues he focused on were reducing jail overcrowding and consolidating the Superior and Municipal Courts.

Prior to joining the Board of Supervisors, Pete McHugh served for twenty years on the Milpitas City Council. He was first elected to the Milpitas City Council in 1976, and became the first elected, not appointed, Mayor of Milpitas in 1978. Pete McHugh then served as Mayor and City Councilmember until his election to the Board of Supervisors in 1996.

Of his many accomplishments as Mayor, Pete McHugh is most proud of opening up City commissions to all ethnic groups. He also expanded library services, laid the foundation for bringing light rail to Milpitas, and converted the Ayer High School site into a sports complex which is the equal of any in Santa Clara County. He was also fundamental in the development of the Milpitas Town Center, the Milpitas Town Square, and the Great Mall of the Bay Area.

Pete McHugh has received numerous honors and acknowledgments for his accomplishments and community service. He has been recognized by the United States Congress, California State Senate, Santa Clara County, and the City of Milpitas for his service and dedication. He has received commendations from various ethnic communities, as well as numerous charitable organizations for his commitment.

Pete McHugh was born in Boston, Massachusetts. After graduation from Boston Latin High School, he attended Boston University's College of Business Administration. He then moved to Southern California where he joined IBM Corporation and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of California Los Angeles.
