If elected, Mike Hathaway would be the only member of the Central Committee with a background in the high tech industry, and one of a handful out of the 22 elected members to graduate from local schools. Mike was born and raised in San Jose, California and is the son of two educators. His mother is the principal of the Los Gatos Christian Church School and his father is a teacher and administrator in the East Side Union High School District. He attended Los Gatos Christian Elementary School, John Steinbeck Middle School, and San Jose High School before doing his undergraduate work at West Valley College, Rochester Institute of Technology and San Jose State University.

During high school, Mike served as a member of the swim team and as Editor in Chief of the school newspaper. His interest in journalism continued at West Valley College, where he was active as a photographer and Photo Editor of the school paper, the Norseman. He won statewide awards for his photography at both the high school and college levels. At Rochester Institute of Technology, he studied digital photography at the nation's leading program in this field. While there, he took a job running and maintaining the campus computer labs. The combination of his academic work and interest in computers led him to return to the Silicon Valley to pursue a career in the high tech industry.

Once back in the Silicon Valley, Mike became active in South Valley Christian Church and volunteered his time as a computer network administrator and programmer for nonprofit agencies. He served as a member of the West Valley College Accreditation Committee, which evaluated the curriculum to ensure it met national standards. He currently works full time as a computer programmer and technician for Shea Homes, one of the country's leading home builders.
