Educational Program

By Henry L. Petrino

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Sylvan Union School District

This information is provided by the candidate
We need to improve the articulation of our elementary program with that of the high school district.
Today's 8th graders will graduate high school in 2004. Maybe. In 2004 these youngsters will be required to take a state mandated proficiency test in math and science. They will be required to pass this test without regard to the number of units they have completed and without regard to their grade point average as a condition of graduating. This is not specualtion. It is the law.

Historically, Modesto High School District and Sylvan have, in substance, each done "their own thing" in the development of educational program. While it has worked to some extent, it has never been the relationship of common effort that it should be. The new state requirements have forced the issue. Our children deserve a seamless program in their entire K-12 experience. The program must, by state law, prepare them for success at graduation time.

Now is the time to develop a program in which each grade level prepares the student for the next in an articulated manner, regardless of district juisdiction. Let's get to work!
