Dear Fellow Citizens:

On November 2, we will have an opportunity to elect a new Board member to the Pt. Monitor Fire District. Your choice will determine the future of emergency services in our growing community.

We believe that candidate Joe Loomis will provide competent responsible leadership for our community.

Joe headed up the Citizens Committee for Passage of Measure H in the Fall of 1995. This proposition saved our Fire Department from financial collapse.

After that he was appointed to serve as Director to serve out the term of a resigning Director from January 1996 - December 1997.

When Joe took his seat in January 1996, our Fire Department consisted of a part-time Fire Chief and two on duty firefighters in a small fire house in Moss Beach.

Joe explored ways to improve emergency services, including several trips to Sacramento on his own time to speak with legislators and attend seminars on ways to improve the level of service and save taxpayers' money.

The result was a cooperative arrangement to join forces with the Half Moon Bay Fire Protection District to serve the entire Coastside.

This alliance vastly improved the services we received. Now we have at our disposal a full-time Fire Chief, three Battalion Chiefs, a force of 42 firefighters, 15 volunteers, paramedics on our fire engines, and water rescue, wildland fire, and cliff rescue programs. In addition, we have the use of three fire stations, increased training facilities, and a vastly increased inventory of fire fighting equipment and apparatus.

We have come a long way since 1995. Remarkably, all this was accomplished without additional cost to the taxpayers. In fact, costs have been trimmed due to the economies of scale flowing from our alliance with the Half Moon Bay District.

We believe that Joe Loomis did an extraordinary job for our community in a very short period of time and should once again serve on our Fire Board.

The challenge for the new Board will be to monitor the arrangement with our neighboring Fire District. Over the next year or two, if the interim arrangement continues to work smoothly, the next step would be to explore the feasibility of combining both Districts into a single District.

Joe has been a resident of the coastside for 26 years. He is a retired U.S. Coast Guard Officer trained in the administration of emergency services. He has worked in our community as lawyer, Judge Pro Tem, college professor, and real estate broker.

We believe Joe is well qualified to lead our Fire District into the 21st century. Please vote for our community on November 2.
