David L. Buckmaster Vice Mayor, City of San Carlos

In 1995, David Buckmaster was elected to the San Carlos City Council. He is now serving as Vice-Mayor and is currently the youngest elected official in San Mateo County. David was born and raised in San Carlos, graduated from San Carlos public schools, and attended high school at Serra. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from Loyola Marymount University where he met his wife Kim, a first grade public school teacher in the Cupertino School District.

In his professional career, Buckmaster is Director of Education and Workforce Preparedness for the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group (SVMG). Founded in 1978 by David Packard of Hewlett-Packard, the Manufacturing Group is a public policy trade association that represents 140 of the largest private sector employers in Silicon Valley, who collectively provide jobs to 250,000 area workers, or nearly one-third of the Valley's workforce.

Prior to joining the Manufacturing Group, David worked for three years in the office of State Assemblymember Jim Cunneen. In that position, David acted as the staff spokesperson and was the advisor and community liaison on education, business, environment, health, labor and technology issues. David was also actively involved in Jim Cunneen's election and re-election to the Assembly, serving as the Deputy Campaign Manager and the Campaign Finance Director.

Buckmaster staffs the Education Committee and Facility Managers Committee for SVMG and their permit streamlining efforts. The Education Committee is focused on the recruitment and retention of qualified and outstanding teachers. The goal is for each student to be taught by teachers highly knowledgeable in the subject being taught with demonstrated ability to teach that subject well. The Committee is led by member company representatives from over 150 of Silicon Valley's largest companies.

Buckmaster also serves on numerous boards, task forces and commissions that reflect his interest in education, government, business and children. He serves on the Board of Industry Initiatives for Science and Math Education (IISME), Provident Central Credit Union, City/County Association of Government (CCAG), Resource Area for Teachers (RAFT), and the San Mateo County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Buckmaster also annually hosts a charity barbecue and softball tournament that has raised more than $12,000 for local charities that help disabled children and adults, low-income senior citizens and the development of a Youth Center. This past year, David served on the Railroad Land Use Committee, The San Carlos Downtown parking Committee and the Harbor Industrial Land Use Committee. He continues to also serve on numerous Task Forces for NOVA/Private Industry Council, Joint Venture Silicon Valley, Smart Schools, Sigma Chi Fraternity, Leadership Redwood City, Republican Local Officials League, Girl Scouts of Santa Clara County and many school districts. This year he was Co-Chair and Class Representative for Loyola Marymount University's Class of 1994.
