Critical Planning for the next 4 years

By Marta I. Bookbinder

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Jefferson School District

As educators we are challenged to account for the learning and safety of our students. My Strategy and Vision.
If elected I will:

  • Continue to encourage partnerships with the community and businesses as they have already given us so much support. During the past year, various partnerships generated additional revenue for our district adding over $800,000 to our budget.

  • Monitor the educational dollars received from our state budget to maximize effective spending, taking into consideration that the decrease in student enrollment -which lowers the current income from that of previous years- makes a critical impact in our sources of funding.

  • Bring quality programs such as: 1,000 Days to Literacy, which will bring students to read at grade level by the 3rd grade; Family Math Nights that provide parent and school interaction in the process of learning math to benefit students; School Reform as established in partnership with San Francisco State University.

  • Design a Circle of Accountability surrounding the children in safety and learning, implementing ideas like the Zero Tolerance Letter, the Safety Forum, and advocacy/counseling programs such as Healthy Start. Continue to promote that the youth (our students) sit at the table with us and help us develop better measures for school safety.

My Vision for the district would encompass the following:

  • All children can and will learn
  • All children will learn to read and then they will be reading to learn
  • All children will have VOICE.

    V ision.

    O riginality.

    I magination.

    C ommitment.

    E xpectations.

I look forward to the challenge!
