City Support For Burlingame Schools?

By Cathy Baylock

Candidate for Council Member; City of Burlingame

Q. What do you mean when you say "I would give more City support to the public schools?"
A. Burlingame's appeal and a large part of residents' property values are based on the high quality of the Burlingame Elementary School District. Realtors tout it, test scores highlight it, and parents depend on it. Yet, we have just gone through a drastic reduction in services ranging from librarians to PE instructors to Reading, Music and ESL teachers, that threatens that reputation.

We could offer City support via "in kind" services like loaning librarian time or supporting PE and Music through the Rec Department.

Furthermore, Burlingame is in the unique position of having a huge hotel tax base to fund its many City services. 4% of our annual hotel taxes (nearly $500,000) was given to the San Mateo County Visitors and Convention Bureau funding 55% of its budget while the majority of cities in San Mateo County that benefit from the Bureau only gave 2% of theirs. If we were to fund the Convention Bureau at the same level as other participating cities, this would free up nearly $250,000 for other uses such as providing "in kind" services.
