Reorganization of school districts to transfer a portion of the territory currently a part of the Laguna Salada Union Elementary School District and the Jefferson Union High School District to the San Bruno Park Elementary School District and the San Mateo Union High School District.
Summary:
Persuant to Education Code 35710, the San Mateo County Committee On School District Organization approved petitions to transfer certain territory, including but not limited to, the neighborhoods of Pacific Heights, Portola Highlands and Spyglass from the Laguna Salada Elementary School District and the Jefferson Union High School District to the San Bruno Park Elementary School District and the San Mateo Union High School District. Pursuant to section 35710, the County Superintendent of Schools has called an election in the affected area. Accordingly, only those qualified voters who reside within the area of the proposed transfer can vote on this measure.

If the measure passes, the transfer would become effective July 1, 2000 and students in the affected area would attend San Bruno Park Elementary and San Mateo Union High School districts.

Arguments For Measure B
For years the Laguna Salada School District which includes all of Pacifica and parts of San Bruno has been at odds with the San Bruno parts of our school district about whether or not they should join the San Bruno School District. In the past annexation attempts have failed because they have been too costly to Laguna Salada and Jefferson School Districts. However, parents in the San Bruno faction of Laguna Salada have remained unhappy and continue to express their interests in affiliation with the San Bruno School District.

Several years ago the board of Laguna Salada decided it was time to end these years of controversy as we needed to make long range property plans for our district and could not without the issue of annexation being resolved.

The annexation plan which is before the voters is a result of intense and fruitful negotiations with the San Bruno School District and Laguna Salada over the disputed area of Laguna Salada which is located in San Bruno. Additionally, both Jefferson and San Mateo School Boards agreed to support the annexation effort. This plan would finally join all parts of San Bruno into one school district, but would be done in such a way that minimizes the negative effects on the finances and middle school program of Laguna Salada.

I encourage you to vote for this annexation plan.
