Question: Why should our Bar Association endorse Mike Schaefer for District Attorney?

By Mike Schaefer

Candidate for District Attorney; City of San Francisco

This information is provided by the candidate
1. MIKE SCHAEFER is not Hallinan.

  • The media has made our District Attorney well known to all of us. I take the high-road and merely demand that we vote for a change - be it Schaefer, Castleman, Fazio, or Gonzalez.

2. MIKE SCHAEFER has solid educational and performance background:

  • Graduate of UC Berkeley (1960), and Georgetown Law (1963) with studies at Notre Dame and USC Tax Institute.

  • Assistant prosecutor and two-term city councilman for the City of San Diego, California's youngest, upon return to my native California from Washington, D.C.

  • Financial analyst for the Securities & Exchange Commission, securities investigator for California Corporations Commission, and moot court judge for local law schools. Raised chickens, delivered newspapers and enjoyed many seasons as a professional Santa Claus.

  • Have argued cases to Supreme Courts of 5 states and filed four cases with U.S. Supreme Court. Won landmark voting rights litigation, Canaan v. Abdelnour, 40 C3d 703, the write-in ballot case. And after many trial court victories against alphabetical listing of candidates (denial of equal protection), the Legislature responded with the random alphabet for all California elections.

  • Have defended felons, sued public officials, handled million-dollar civil cases - but of all challenges of my extenive legal career, I have most enjoyed prosecution, standing up for the People. And am good at it.

3.MIKE SCHAEFER is also a good businessman:

  • The district attorney employs hundreds of people, has a budget of $45 million. Hallinan's budget has grown 67% during his 4 years, our population up just 4.5%. I have managed businesses grossing $1 million and assured financial independence for my family-myself, sons Derek and Mike. The District Attorney must know business, use common sense and good judgement in spending tax dollars. We can do better.

4. MIKE SHAEFER is the only candidate:

  • Pledged to end gas-pump price gouging. Will explore all alternatives with key public lawyers and assert the leadership that has been lacking.

5. MIKE SCHAEFER has no longstanding relationships with any public officials (other that Hallinan, who he campaigned against, and beat, for student-body leadership at UC, 40 years ago), thus can make unfettered decisions as to indictment of public officials, an obligation and opportunity imposed on every District Attorney.

BOTTOM LINE: Mike Schaefer, 61, wants to work for you, doing what he does best, doing what he enjoys the most. Help restore respect of the courts and the citizens to the Office. Have the safest streets and neighborhoods possible. Be safer with Schaefer.
