Mayor Brown Answers Your Questions
I realize Muni still has a long way to go before the complaints are gone, but in fact my administration has instigated its recovery, and we're already seeing many of the fruits of our labors. The Chronicle just did a comprehensive survey of Muni and reported vast improvement -- to an overall B- grade -- with 20 lines receiving A's. Metro service has improved dramatically as well, as has been reported in both papers. I've hired a new General Manager, Michael Burns, who has more than 20 years transit experience and who has already rid the system of "missouts," revamped the anti-graffiti program and extended rush-hour service on the 38-Express by an hour, among other improvements.

As for the new vehicles, my administration took delivery on the 77 Breda LRVs that indeed were ordered under the Jordan administration - but I ordered the remaining 59, which will begin delivery this year, along with desperately needed new motor coaches (280) and trolley coaches (250). What Jordan did do, as was reported by the Civil Grand Jury just this week, was starve the system for four years and allow Muni to slide into the disarray in which I found it.

I've admitted that I underestimated the problems at Muni - and made a dumb comment about fixing it in 100 days - but I've also said that I won't rest until San Francisco has the world-class transit system that it deserves. Each day we get a little closer to that goal.
