Land use

By Huldah Champion

Candidate for Council Member; City of Gilroy

This information is provided by the candidate
Meeting Gilroy's need for affordable housing while preserving our fertile land for the agriculturists.
Utilize second and third stories above business and commercial buildings for affordable housing. Wherever possible, ease the parking problem by underground parking for new commercial buildings, or have parking on the ground floor with offices on the second floor, and studio apartments on a third floor. We go either up or out. Going out will bring the sprawl that will cost Gilroy the rich farmland that can sustain the city through lean times, and protect the environment in the meantime. Careful, creative planning to utilize our present buildings to their fullest capacity can prevent the costly unwanted sprawl that has crippled so many California communities. We reserve land as parks (for recreation) throughout our cities and towns, why can't we reserve agricultural lands as "agricultural parks"?
