Civic Participation

By John C. Strawn

Candidate for Council Member; City of Santa Barbara

This information is provided by the candidate
It takes effort to operate as a democracy. The City of Santa Barbara should make it as easy as possible for residents to participate in the decision-making process.
I support developing town hall forums which deal with opportunites for youth, reducing violence in our schools & our society and other issues; creating a community media center which will facilitate conversations between citizens, government, health & human services organizations as well as the arts; community policing and neighborhood precincts; campaign finance reform, to include free access to the media and public financing.

I believe that our winner-take-all electoral system makes it diffucult for minority viewpoints to be represented. I support proportional representation.

I believe City commisssions and committees should be required to be gender and ethnically balanced.
