School Reform

By Arthur Dennis Crable

Candidate for Member, Board of Education; Pasadena Unified School District; Seat 1

This information is provided by the candidate
We as parents/relatives/community residents must re-engage ourselves in the daily operation of this school district in order to lead our children to academic success. This district must cut the administrative fat, cease ineffective programs, and perform the tasks that are unnecessarily passed on to consultants. Also, this district must develop strict, documented criteria for hiring and evaluating teachers, principals, and administrators.
My name is Arthur Dennis Crable, and I have lived all but the first two months of my 46-year life in Pasadena. I am married, and I have a 7th grade daughter enrolled in this school district. I am a graduate of Blair High School and the University of California at Irvine. I am a businessman, the sole proprietor of my own environmental consulting company, and I have taught full and part-time in PUSD since 1987. I currently teach 5th grade at Washington Elementary. My platform is as follows:

SCHOOL REFORM: Average PUSD standardized test scores show our kids to be two to four years behind grade level. Campus and classroom behavior is an embarrassment. Our children are destroying themselves by their behavior alone.

I want to remind PUSD parents that they are the owners of this school district and the responsibility that goes with that title. I want to persuade parents and neighbors to actively participate in the operation of their schools by giving two to four hours a month of their time, before, during, or after school.

We need to recruit teachers based on a strict set of guidelines developed by the District in cooperation with the community at large. These guidelines should underline the characteristics necessary to be successful in this district, based on our history, demographics, and ethnicity. Additionally, we must evaluate our current teachers, principals, and administrators based on an equally thoughtful and stringent set guidelines in order to assess their effectiveness or identify issues that must be rectified quickly.

We need to admit that the PUSD has, to date, not fulfilled its primary duty to our children which is to insure their equal access to future job markets. Simply put, our children can1t compete academically or intellectually with children from well-run school districts. However, our children have proven consistently that they can compete with anyone, given an academic environment that is conducive to learning, not disorder, mayhem, and neglect.

We need to elect me, Arthur Dennis Crable, to PUSD school board because of my proven ability to motivate students, parents, and peers to achieve greater educational and personal results. This year, my class improved their SAT 9 scores by an average of 20 points in reading, language, and math. No other candidate has my professional experience or success rate. I have improved every classroom situation that I have been associated with, and I can improve our schools more quickly and effectively as a PUSD board member.
