What I Will Bring to the School Board - A Summary

By Linda H. Bair

Candidate for Governing Board Member; La Canada Unified School District

Six key points about why I will make a positive difference for change on the LCUSD School Board
I believe I can bring a fresh perspective, talent and experience to the board based on the following:

1. I bring broad educational experience to the table.

I've been a teacher, principal and school district adminstrator. I also earned my Doctorate and Masters degrees in Educational Administration along the way. I know what it takes to make a classroom, a school and a school district successful.

2. I'll be the only board member with elementary school children.

Over 50% of our district's students are enrolled in elementary schools. Two board members currently have no children enrolled in our schools... the other three have no children at the elementary level. As a former elementary principal and teacher, and mother of elementary school children, I understand the unique needs of our youngest students. Many people I talk with think the board should be more representative. I will be a voice for all our children, including our elementary students.

3. I will bring the school district and city together on common issues.

This was one of the goals set by our new city council, which I think should be a given. I will take a leading role working with our city to insure that programs like the new Teen Center will always have an educational component.

4. I will keep parents informed and a part of the process.

I'm told too many important decisions are made without proper notification and dialogue, such as the recent dismissal of our elementary art coordinator. I will never allow decisions like this to be made without first letting parents be heard.

5. I will offer better understanding of important financial issues.

Why is it most people I talk with do not clearly understand the pros and cons of the current Bond proposal, one that will affect us for years to come? I will clarify such issues so we know what we're buying, before we accept the bill.

6. I will be a proactive force on the School Board.

It seems to many that the School Board is often reactive to new developments. I will work with staff at the outset on specific issues and challenges. As a Board Member I can help to lead the process rather than react to it.

I'd like to know your thoughts on these and other issues. You can email your point of view and questions to me at lhbair@hotmail.com or call me at 818.790.2022
