SUZANNE ANGELI FOR PLEASANT HILL CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE POSITION STATEMENT

SCHOOLS

Quality of public secondary education and local schools remains a serious
concern for Pleasant Hill residents following campus closures, reopening and
redrawing of boundary lines for attendance. While I share that concern and
commitment to the best educational opportunities for Pleasant Hill youth, I
realize that the legal role of city council members in this arena is limited, while
the Mt. Diablo Unified School District Board of Trustees is the designated leader
and authority.

The Pleasant Hill City Council should strive to improve its relations and communications with other immediate and surrounding jurisdictions, such as the
school board. The council can tackle related issues like safety, traffic and provisions of crossing guards to enhance student safety. It also might want to
consider offering the use of City Hall council chambers and the City Hall meeting
room for public hearings and informational meetings between the school board
and community, to open up those processes to wider audiences and encourage
more community participation than otherwise may be possible. The council also must work with the school district to resolve mutual concerns about land use.

Beyond such steps, however, the Pleasant Hill City Council must focus its
attention and energies on city government and services. I've elected to seek a
seat on the city council, not the school board. I recognize and respect the
school board's expertise and legal authority in educational matters, as the board recognizes the city council's eminent role in local government. We can and
must work together.
