Lee's Campaign Theme "Our Voice, Our Choice"

Staying in touch with the Constituent

Hearing about the Issues before it's TOO LATE

Just like individuals, communities have a voice. That's why we often hear the term, "voice of the people." It is past time for the city of Nashville to hear the collective voice of the people of this 6th District. That collective voice must include the diverse sounds of over 20,000 of us, speaking from 8,000 households.

For too long many of us have tried to be heard, but our voices have fallen on deaf ears. Far too often the sounds of the political network and big money interests have drowned the efforts of the common neighborhood. Some of us have simply given up out of frustration. Some of us have forgotten how to use our community voice. But worst of all, some of us have forgotten we even have a voice, or that we ever had one.

That's why I want to be your representative to Metro Council: to remind us that, whether we've lived here a long time or a short time, we come from a heritage in East Nashville of some folks who've been pretty vocal through the years in many ways. We need to be proud of that historical tradition and to live in it now and always.

"Politics" means "of the people." It's time to get our political vocal cords back in shape, so that after August 5th we'll be in a position to speak our collective mind and heart. For Nashville now stands at the crossroads of incredible change and opportunity. We either allow our voices to be heard, or the changes of the future will ravage our neighborhood in ways we could only imagine.

So, like a singer, we need to vocalize between now and the August 5th election. That's what we are going doing now as a community. Getting our "pipes" back in shape. We are doing it by having many home gatherings where we have listened to one another's voice while truly hearing what's being said.

In addition, we have geographically divided the 6th District into 30 sub-areas. Each one of those has, or will have, a sub-area coordinator. That person's task is to help me with the council election. After the election, that person (or someone else from that area) will serve with me as a kind of co-councilperson. Each of these individuals will help me to listen to the voices of their neighbors. They will help me to learn not just the needs of our citizens, but what they and we have to offer in our community. They will help me to communicate to our constituents what on earth is going on in city government that affects East Nashville, so that WE can determine what goes on here, and not be notified at a time when it's TOO LATE to do anything about it.

There will, of course, be other opportunities to hear one another's views and suggestions. This is just the beginning.

VOCALIZE!! Let's do it.
