What should a Justice do?

By Francis E. Sweeney

Candidate for Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court; Term Starting 1/1/99

This information is provided by the candidate
The canons of judicial ethics limit my ability to campaign on "positions." I do, however, believe a Supreme Court Justice should: 1. Increase public safety for every citizen and community.
2. Ensure fairness under the law for families, children, businesses and community organizations.
3. Ensure that victims are treated with respect and dignity.
4. Aspire to high quality, timely management of cases at a reasonable cost to the public.
5. Act in a fashion that sustains and improves public confidence in our democracy.
6. Continually seek appropriate balances among the rights and responsibilities of citizens and organizations.
7. Maintain a separation of powers in constitutional matters without over-stepping the bounds of a responsible judiciary.
