The Portman Record in Congress

  • A leader in the fight for IRS reform, Rob's landmark IRS Reform and Restructuring Act puts taxpayers first by creating new taxpayer rights and protections, and overhauling the IRS for the first time in 46 years.
  • An advocate of real tax relief, Rob wrote the law to eliminate the capital gains tax on the sale of most homes. He is consistently ranked among the top members of Congress by the National Taxpayers Union. and was named a "Taxpayer Hero" by Citizens Against Government Waste.
  • A protector Of Social Security and Retirement Savings, Rob is fighting to stop the irresponsible practice Of the Social Security Trust Fund to finance new government spending. He has gained national recognition for his innovative legislation to expand the availability of Pension plans and protect retirement savings of millions of workers.
  • A crusader to protect our kids from drugs, Rob's Drug-Free Communities Act empowers parents, teachers, faith leaders, law enforcement, businesses and others to reverse the rising tide of teenage drug abuse. He's leading the effort nationally to reduce the demand for drugs through prevention, education and treatment.
  • A champion of small businesses and the jobs they create, Rob has worked to bring new jobs to our region, and authored legislation that stops the federal government from imposing costly new mandates on small business. Rob has received a 100% rating from the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). Representing America's small businesses.
  • A friend of state and local government, Rob wrote the landmark Unfunded Mandates Relief Act and shepherded it through Congress
  • A steward of the environment, Rob's Tropical Forest Conservation Act has been described as the most important international environmental law to be enacted this year.
  • A leader in the renewed effort to recognize the important history of the underground railroad, Rob's Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Act was enacted into law this year. It will help disseminate information about this chapter of our history and assist the Underground Railroad Freedom Center underway here in Cincinnati.
  • A Congressman who puts constituents first, Rob accepts no special interest PAC money and stays in close touch with constituents including holding regular town meetings. He and his wife, Jane, have chosen to keep their home and raise their family here in our area.
