Alternatives to traditional government schools
Do government schools really work? It costs an average of $5,000 annually (depending on the geographical area) to educate a child in the government (public) school system. The education these children receive is increasing in cost every year, while steadily declining in quality. There are several other options which should be available to parents, including home schooling, vouchers, and charter schools.

Vouchers toward education can save taxpayer money. Many parents would like to choose home schooling so their child reaps the benefits of a loving home environment and can be taught with the values, religions, and life styles of their family. Home-schooled children are tested annually, and usually test higher than their government-educated counterparts. (Note: The 1997 Spelling Bee Champion was home-schooled). Some people will argue that home-schooled children do not develop social skills and need to be around other children. Social skills can be developed through after-school sports and recreational activities (soccer team, Girl Scouts, etc.) Social skills do not need to be taught by our government. Instead of giving $5,000 to a local school district for one child's annual education, $2,500 can be given directly to the parents for either home schooling or putting their child into a privately owned school. This would save 50% for taxpayers and benefit parents by giving them more choice.

Charter schools are yet another option. They are independently run schools which are proven to save money and provide a superior education for their students. These schools are run by a small group of educators, and children must maintain a certain level of attendance and participation to remain enrolled.

All of these options should be investigated as alternate means of education. Parents should have more of a choice regarding how their child is educated. Government schools should not be the only alternative for those who cannot afford private education tuition.
