Top Priorities if Elected
  • Appellate justices are bound by federal and state constitutions, and must follow the law as adopted by the legislature, and voters by initiatives.
  • Appellate courts should be open and accessible to the public.
  • Appeals must be concluded in a timely fashion; justice delayed is justice denied.

Position Papers
Judicial Retention Elections
Every four years, many voters and their friends and families wonder, "Who are these supreme court and court of appeal justices for whom I am asked to vote? How can I learn something about them? And what are these supreme and appellate courts anyway?" This paper was prepared by the California Judges Association to answer these questions.
Jurisprudential Philosophy
As eloquently stated by former United States Supreme Court Justice Benjamin Cardozo, a judge "is to draw his inspiration from consecrated principles" and "[t]he concept of fairness must not be strained till it is a filament." Justice Cardozo's statements, quoted in full in the main text, summarize Justice Nicholson's jurisprudential philosophy.
