HEALTHCARE

By Gray Davis

Candidate for Governor

This information is provided by the candidate
HEALTHCARE - Californians are experiencing unprecedented problems with health care. Many Californians are uninsured, many cannot get proper coverage, and managed care plans need to be responsible to patients and their physicians. Among other things, HMO's must be held responsible for the quality and scope of their services and they must be held accountable for their decisions regarding medical care. Gray Davis will give California's healthcare system the attention that our citizens deserve. A WOMAN'S RIGHT TO CHOOSE - Gray Davis has been a consistent supporter of women's rights, including securing a woman's right to make her own decision about abortion. It is also extremely important for women to have access to family planning services that provide medical services. Throughout his 25 years in public service, he has demonstrated a strong record in support of numerous women's issues including comparable worth legislation, additional funding for child care, protection against domestic violence and protecting a woman's right to have safe access to health clinics. More specifically, in 1992, he drafted an Assembly bill that became state law, making it a crime to intentionally prevent an individual from entering or exiting a health care facility by obstructing access. As an Assemblymember, he earned a near-perfect score for supporting women's issues by the California National Organization for Women and the League of Women Voters. As Governor, Gray Davis would sign a bill banning late term abortions except where a woman's treating doctor has determined that it is a medically necessary procedure to save her life and health.
