Candidate for
Board Member; South San Francisco Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate

Three members of the South San Francisco Unified School District are running a joint campaign for election. They are Shirley Hoch, Romolo Braschi and Philip Weise.

It is unusual for candidates to run a campaign as a team, but this board of trustees has been remarkable in its ability to come together and work together. For this reason we believe that South San Francisco will benefit if all the present trustees are returned to office.

We endorse Hoch, Braschi and Weise. They have been in the forefront of a number of accomplishments that have resulted in the school district's forward movement.

The board was responsible for the passage of a $40 million general obligation bond. They rallied the city behind the measure and succeeded in getting more than two-thirds of the vote to support the bond. The money for the bond will do much to bring the schools up to date during the next
century so that South San Francisco students will be able to compete successfully with any student anywhere in California.

To ensure that the money is spent wisely, the board appointed an oversight committee made up of citizens in the community, then the board implemented Phase I bond projects.

It developed and implemented the Eisenhower Grant for staff development in math and science.

It co-sponsored the Families on Track program to support at-risk middle school students.

It developed a new English language development program, sponsored a business partnership
breakfast and maintains the business/school partnership program.

It reduced class sizes to 20 in all Kindergarten through third-grade classes. The district is prepared
to match state funds if the November bond issue is passed in the state.

It settled labor contracts with no dispute or recriminations, nurturing good relationships with
employee unions.

There are more programs that have been implemented by the present board that reflects on their outstanding contribution to the city's system of education but we can't list them all. We are impressed with the work they have done and we urge the citizens of South San Francisco to elect them to the school board so they can finish the job. The INDEPENDENT newspaper.
