Here's Why Three Current Members Of The Atherton City Council Will Vote For Alan Carlson In The November Election . . .

When I decided to retire from the Atherton City Council, in an open letter to the residents of our Town I urged individuals with business and management experience to lend their knowledge and abilities to our community, and to consider seeking election to the City Council. I said and believe that these are times of change that need the best people to serve and provide the leadership necessary to guide us on the road ahead. I' m pleased that Alan Carlson has answered this call to serve our community. Alan has 25 years of management and legal experience to contribute to the Town. He has proven his abilities in representing the Town with respect to labor issues involving our Police Department. I have personally observed and worked with Alan on these and other matters for the Town, and am impressed by his ability to quickly grasp and understand key issues, and to resolve problems in a short time. I am excited about Alan's decision to run for the City Council and I firmly believe he will do an excellent job as a member of the Council.

Bob Huber
Member of the Atherton City Council

The Police Department will account for about 56 percent of the Town's operating budget this year. As a founding and 20 year member of the Atherton Crime Prevention Task Force, I know that Atherton residents consider police services to be among the most important provided by the Town. Alan Carlson possesses significant knowledge concerning the Department gained from diligently working on behalf of the Town since 1995. In 1995 and 1997 Alan successfully negotiated labor agreements for the Town with the Atherton Police Officers' Association. These agreements were considered by all to be fair and equitable, were ratified by the Town's police officers, and unanimously adopted by the City Council. Alan has proven his abilities in representing the Town, and when the next labor agreement expires and is renegotiated in 2000, he will be an invaluable asset to have on the City Council. These are among the reasons why I support and will vote for Alan's election to the Council.

Nan Chapman
Vice-Mayor and Member of the Atherton City Council

Alan Carlson in many ways is a unique candidate in the Atherton City Council election. Alan has already demonstrated through his previous work for the Town the value of his abilities and experience which he will contribute to the Council. Just as important though, from working with Alan I know that he will contribute new ideas and fresh approaches to issues and problems coming before the Council. He is committed to achieving what is best for Atherton. To accomplish this he is also committed to consensus building between residents and their City Council by maintaining communication with the community through the Town's commissions, committees, and resident groups. When Alan announced his candidacy, I told the Country Almanac on behalf of Nan Chapman and myself that Alan was such an outstanding candidate that we had to give him our support. Alan is an outstanding candidate, and that is why I will vote for him in November.

Malcolm Dudley
Mayor and Member of the Atherton City Council
