Facility Improvements and Dredging

By Nancy A. Barlow

Candidate for Member, Board of Directors; San Mateo Harbor District; 4 Year Seat

Renovate restrooms at both facilities and renovate and enlarge Johnson Pier at Pillar Point Harbor. Dredge a channel to Johnson Pier and berthing areas within Oyster Point Marina/Park.
1) Renovate restrooms at Pillar Point Harbor. The restrooms for liveaboards and the public are filthy and inhumane. For years, the berthers have complained to the District about the restrooms with no results. During the past 2 1/2 years, no action was ever taken to improve the restrooms for our paying customers, the berthers. Yet the District increased their berth fees! A top priority should be to immediately improve all restrooms at Pillar Point Harbor.

2) Renovate and enlarge Johnson Pier. This may allow more fish buying businesses on the pier and ultimately increase competition among current fish buyers to help the fishermen receive a decent wage for their "catch". In addition, safety at the end of Johnson Pier is a major factor, since trailered vehicles (carrying fish) have limited turning space. Enlarging Johnson Pier would increase public safety.

DREDGING

1) Allow the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers to dredge a channel to Johnson Pier. The deepening of the channel to Johnson Pier will allow larger vessels access to Pillar Point Harbor for fish off loading and other possible ventures. Several large vessels visit the Harbor on a yearly basis allowing school children and the public educational opportunities. Deepening the channel may allow other vessels to visit the harbor, thus increasing the educational experience for the public.

2) Dredge Oyster Point Marina/Park. Dredging at Oyster Point Marina/Park has not occurred for several years due to financial constraints of the District. This delay has resulted in increased sediment in select berth areas. Vessel owners do not want to berth in these areas as "sitting in mud" causes damage to the vessel's hull, thus revenue to the District has been lost. Dredging this area is an immediate priority.

As a Harbor District employee for several years, I have intimate knowledge of the issues, concerns and opportunities affecting the District. My experience with the District lessees has given me ultimate respect for the small business owner in their daily struggle with operating a business at Pillar Point Harbor and its parking issues.

I ask your vote and confidence in electing me Harbor Commissioner. My years of employment with the District has given me inside knowledge and appreciation about the issues affecting the District, which I would not have acquired, without being a "worker" at a Harbor District.
