Board of Supervisors

Strong Educational Background - Women's Issues

Tom Ammiano has had a long history with the public educational system. As both a school teacher and School Board Memebr, Tom has worked to improve San Francisco's educational system. This remains one of his top priorities. He is used to listening to the voices of mothers and grandmothers. For this reason he has an uncommon sensitivity towards women and women's issues. Tom insists that women from a range of experiences be able to have access to poltical process - to have their voices heard. A True Progressive

One of Supervisor Amminao's greatest assets is his ability to note the absences of opinion. For example, if there is discussion of an issue and all the input has come from only the gay community, he will note that limitation and seek other voices. He is willing to listen to other people's point of view. For this reason, he is a true progressive, not merely a "gay agendist". He constantly addresses issues of discrimination and privilege. He recognizes and is thoughful about his privilege as a white man.

Successful Activist

Tom was the top vote getter in the 1990 S.F. Board of Education race and served terms as their President and Vice President. He was the main architect of the San Francisco Domestic Partners Ordinance which provides equal benefits for the employees of companies that contract with the City and County of S.F. He has led the effort for better AIDS education in S.F. schools and recieved the Harvey Milk Community Service Award. Tom has supported open government.

He is the only Supervisor who carries and uses a MUNI Fast-Pass. You may run into Tom at your bus stop. He is very easy to communicate with, and wants to hear your concerns. "Tom Ammiano is the only supervisor that still gives a damn about the little guy." says AIDS Activist, Jeff Getty.
