Reforming Our High Schools

By George St.Clair

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Campbell Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Reforming schools in a climate of public scepticism and a lack of focus in educational policymaking are major obstacles to meaningful reform.
People need to see a new approach working in their local schools, even if on a small scale. They will be swayed only by "proof" that it produces the results educators say it does. The public is in a "show me" mood. The challenge is to get parents in the schoolhouse door to see for themselves.

The CUHSD has increased its commitment to communicating with parents in a variety of ways and increased efforts at involving parents in their local high school. The level of parental involvement is on the rise at all of our schools and word is spreading that we offer good value to our students. Our schools are getting the results the public expects. Is there room for improvement? Certainly--and each year we are doing a better job.

I would like to see the District redouble its efforts in the direction of improving communication channels and continue its pursuit of meaningful reform--rather than taking a scattershot approach or blindly adopting the latest educational fad.
