Preventing Domestic Violence Through Community Policing

By Ruben Z. Diaz

Candidate for Sheriff

This information is provided by the candidate
"Keeping families Safe"
I believe that family violence is one of the most serious and critical issues facing law enforcement today. Family violence can come in many forms…spousal abuse, child abuse or elder abuse. Family violence can be physical, sexual or emotional. Family violence can occur between husband and wife, parent and sibling, parent and elderly relative or partner and partner. In any form, family violence is one of the most serious and critical issues facing our society today.

As Sheriff, I will enhance the Sheriff's Office Domestic Violence Task Force. I will implement and maintain an all-inclusive strategy that will increase the level of importance of law enforcement's responsibility in confronting family violence. This strategy will include research, education, training, counseling, multi-agency collaboration, policy, legislative enforcement and the Santa Clara Chief's Association. In fact, I have already commissioned a survey of victim shelters to determine what law enforcement needs to do to further assist the victims of this crime.

I recognize that family violence can seriously impact an entire community. I understand that the specter of family violence can strike within law enforcement and that the safety of our employees and their families is a paramount of importance. Therefore, I will fully commit to an essential community partnership and to the safety of all families through our perseverance.
