By Anthony "Tony" Alexander

Dorsa Elementary becomes Alum Rock first Elementary California Distinguished School. Positive events moves Alum Rock Schools forward.
This year is an exciting time for our children in education. Many things are happening in Alum Rock, from class size reduction to higher test scores for children in our district.

We have more parent involvement in our schools and hundreds of parents have graduated from the school district parents institute.

Our Board pushed for the "Success for All" reading program in our elementary schools. One school, Dorsa Elementary, is now a CALIFORNIA DISINGUISHED SCHOOL.

We have formed community partnerships with local Business Associations and Silicon Valley Companies to help improve education in our schools. We have worked with other elected officials to help us maintain safer schools, and obtain more homework and youth centers.

In 1995, the San Jose Mercury News stated, "Alexander has the sensibilities and the leadership skills necessary for building teamwork among the five members. Building one won't be easy, but Tony has what it takes".

My goal is to continue improving our schools so my three-year-old son, Jordan will attend a California Distinguished School with his friends in the year 2000.
