Improved Air Transportation

By Jack Mayes

Candidate for Director, Short Term; Santa Maria Public Airport District

This information is provided by the candidate
In addition to feeder air service, long term investigation shoulÀer high speed rail or rigiid airship service to LAX.
We need to study alternate methods of transporting passengers and goods from Sant Maria to LAX to provide the average person with air travel options. Feeder air service will never be economical and the accumulated time requirements at the various terminals negate many of the benefits of air service. Ground transportation via the freeways will become increasingly expensive and make effective sheduling impossible. The current efforts of the directors in the area of a Foreign Trade Zone status for the airport and/or joint use application with Vandenberg Air Force Base should be actively supported. Accomplishing these goals could provide the volume of local air travel required to generate the necessary profit for a major scheduled air service.

Meanwhile we must not overlook the contribution of Genaral Aviation pilots and their machines. There is much businsess in progress at our airport that is not involved with commercial air travel. People working quietly in hangars, paying rent, buying gas, tools and other products from local sources. Thes folks are an important resource and are typicallly the airports best friends. Every effort should be made to accomodate them, they are our good will ambassadors throughout the state and the country and in addition-pay their own way.
