Improving the Performance of our Public Schools

By Sara A. Myers

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Folsom Cordova Unified School District

We should evaluate the effectiveness of our school programs, change the ones that are not working and focus on the ones that do work. Test scores are up in the FCUSD, a positive trend, but we need to identify why some students fall behind. If we can find ways to motivate youngsters to succeed, we will be taking a giant step toward restoring the credibility of California public schools and all of us will benefit. College bound achievers need to challenged more.
Like many of you, I am concerned about California's future and the decline of our public schools. But I decided to do my part in reversing this trend by running for the FCUSD Board. My top priority is providing a quality education in our public schools. We should evaluate the effectiveness of our school programs, change the ones that are not working and focus on the ones that do work well. Some districts recognize the performance of individual teachers and school teams because they have learned that an incentive program helps nurture an exciting learning environment.

To identify why some students fall behind, I propose that we convene a task force of business people, educators, parents, and social agencies to address the non-achiever issue. If we can find ways to motivate youngsters to succeed, we will be taking a giant step toward restoring the credibility of California public schools and all of us will benefit.

The college bound high achievers need to be challenged more. These students should go beyond meeting the minimal A-F requirements for admission to a UC campus. A more rigorous high school curriculum will make their college transition much easier. My vision for the future is to make the Folsom Cordova district synonymous with quality education. I urge you to support me in this effort.
