Listening to our Citizens

By Galen R. Dean

Candidate for City Council Member; City of Banning

This information is provided by the candidate
Our City government needs to be more responsive to the citizens.
Our City Council needs to represent the citizens, not themselves. Currently, the "Public Comment" section of our council meetings are limited to 3 minutes per person, not to exceed 30 minutes total; therefore, only 10 people can get up to address the council. Although listening to many people say the same thing over and over can get tedious, everyone still has the right to get up and address the council. I advocate removing the total time limit. If there is an issue that is so important to the citizens that a large number of them feel it necessary to speak up, then either delay the rest of the agenda to listen to them, or schedule another public meeting specifically for that issue. After all, this is a democracy where every person has the right to address their government.

If elected, I will work towards removing any obstacles that hinder anyone from speaking up.
