Learning to read English

By Anthony M. "Tony" Valla

Candidate for Governing Board Member; Fullerton School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Every child should learn and read English as soon as possible
All language learning begins at home with the family.

Every child should learn and read English as soon as possible. Schools should work with parents to decide which training program should be used. Every child's unique learning needs should be considered as she learns the English language.

Our schools have the child under their care for only six hours a day. Parents are the "teachers" for the remaining 18 hours. The child is at a great disadvantage if the parent doesn't speak English to him during those 18 hours at home.

I have always favored required Parent Education evening classes so that the parents may speak English to their children when they are at home.
